Say what? I can make donuts in my air fryer? That’s right. This little countertop appliance can do so much, baking included.

Skip the deep fried, big pot of hot oil and bring on a healthier version of good old donut.

Air fryer donuts are fun to make and easy enough that you can get the kids involved. With just a few simple ingredients you’ve got yourself some semi-homemade donuts.

I’ve seen so many variations of this on the internet and thought I had to give it a try.

If you haven’t gotten an air fryer yet, this is the one that I have .

If you are looking for other air fryer recipe check these out:

  • Furikake salmon
  • Honey garlic chicken wings
  • Maple candied bacon
  • Sweet potato fries

And for some other breakfast ideas try Instant Pot egg bites, homemade acai bowls, or Instant Pot yogurt.

What do I need to make ube glazed air fryer donuts?

  • Powdered sugar
  • Milk. You can use fat free, 1%, 2%, whole milk, or the nut milk alternative of your choice here.
  • Ube extract. You can find this in the Asian section of your grocery store or the Asian specialty markets. If you are unable to find this locally you can always get it on Amazon,
  • Vanilla extract. Check out my recipe for homemade Instant Pot vanilla extract
  • Pilsbury Grands biscuit dough. You can use any variation you’d like. I like to use the flaky layers butter tastin’ one.

What other toppings can I use?

Let your imagination run wild and dress these air fryer donuts up any way you like. You can make a plain glaze, cinnamon sugar, sprinkles, or just eat it plain. The possibilities are endless.

How to store air fryer donuts?

These donuts are best eaten fresh, however if you do end up with some left over donuts you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature. These donuts will dry out more quickly than your regular deep fried donuts as there was no oil in the baking process. I would not recommend storing in the refrigerator as this will dry out the donuts even more.

Can you freeze these donuts?

Yes. If you would like to freeze them I would suggest freezing the donuts unglazed. You can then reheat in the air fryer and glaze at that time when ready to eat.

How to make ube glazed air fryer donuts?

Pre heat air fryer to 350F.

In a small bowl combine powdered sugar, milk, ube extract, and vanilla extract. Whisk to combine until smooth.

Open biscuit can and place biscuits on a cutting board. Using a 1 inch round cookie cutter, cut out the center hole of the donuts. You can keep the donut holes to air fry as well.

Spray the basket of the air fryer with non-stick cooking spray. Place donuts in basket with space between each donut. It’s best not to stack these while cooking. You may need to cook these in two batches. Air fry for 3 minutes.

Once the three minutes are up, open the drawer and flip donuts over. Close drawer and air fry for another 2-3 minutes.

Once air frying has completed remove donuts and allow to cool slightly. Then dip donut in to ube glaze and allow to completely cool on a wire cooling rack over a cookie sheet to catch excess drips. Enjoy!

I love the Ube glaze. I found sugar free Ube jam at the Asian store and I make Ube cookies and brownies. Love the flavor and even spread it on my toast. Thanks for the great glaze recipe.

FAQs

Can you air fry donuts instead of deep fry? ›

These doughnuts are baked in the air fryer instead of fried in messy, smelly oil. After air-frying, each doughnut is brushed with a melted butter-vanilla mixture and coated in cinnamon-sugar. Yum! If you know how to make doughnuts, you know how time-consuming and messy the process can be.

How to warm up donuts? ›

Heat up a frying pan over medium-high heat and spray with a light coating of cooking oil. Place 2 donuts in the pan, and allow it to heat up for a minute — watch carefully so the sugar doesn't burn. Flip them over using a spatula and cook the other side.

Why does donut glaze harden? ›

Because we're heating the milk, the sugar will melt when it is added. Sugar becomes hard again when cooled. And because the glaze is in a thin layer on the donuts, the melted sugar will harden quickly once it cools.

Is it better to bake or fry doughnuts? ›

Baked doughnuts are smaller, baking powder driven and more compact. A typical fried glazed donut will be around 269 calories, while a baked donut will have much fewer. The difference is the fact that you won't be dealing with any extra fat from the oil from frying when you bake.

What does Krispy Kreme use to fry donuts? ›

We use vegetable shortening (palm, soybean, and/or cottonseed and canola oil) for zero gram of trans fat per one serving of doughnut. All monoglycerides and diglycerides are vegetable based. Enzymes are also present. The lecithin we use is soy-based.

What does Krispy Kreme do with their leftover donuts? ›

Krispy Kreme said it sends its unsold doughnuts to be recycled into "animal feed" but recently it had changed its processes and now takes waste directly to Portbury Docks for recycling. "Initially, due to the security protocols at the docks, we were unable to gain access this weekend," the spokesperson said.

Can you air fry store-bought donuts? ›

Carefully place the donuts in the air fryer basket, making sure they don't touch each other. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches. Set your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Air fry the donuts for 6-7 minutes, flipping them two-thirds through so both sides cook.

How do you make Krispy Kreme donuts soft again? ›

“We recommend popping our Original Glazed Doughnuts into the microwave for up to 8 seconds to enjoy the most delicious doughnut experience,” a brand representative stated in an email. Should donuts be cooled before glazing? ›

Can air frying substitute for deep frying? ›

CAN AN AIR FRYER DO EVERYTHING A DEEP FRYER DOES? An air fryer cannot do everything a deep fryer does. Unlike deep fryers, air fryers don't tend to create a thick crust. Liquid batters and moist foods may seep through the air fryer basket and may not achieve the desired level of crispiness you're seeking.

Can I use Airfryer as a deep fryer? ›

The temperature and time settings for deep frying in an air fryer can vary depending on the type of food you're cooking. As a general guideline, most foods will deep fry well at a temperature of around 375°F (190°C) for 10-20 minutes, depending on the thickness and type of food.
