Move the ribbon to another location if you don't catch flies in 2-3 days. Flies sometimes stay away from certain areas because of light or moisture. If you haven't caught any flies for a few days, remove the ribbon and move it to another location.

ASSEMBLE! Combining two tablespoons of dish soap, four tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and six tablespoons of water involves nothing more than a quick stir. After that, we're adding a piece of plastic wrap and securing it with a rubber band. Last step is to poke the wrap a few times with a toothpick.

We chose apple cider vinegar as the bait, but use whatever you have on hand. Luckily, flies are attracted to anything sweet — old wine, sugar water, ripe fruit, honey or syrup are some of best bait for a homemade trap. You'll also need dish soap, which helps drown the flies in the liquid.

Dish soap in a fruit fly trap breaks the surface tension of the liquid used within the trap, causing the flies to fall into the liquid instead of sitting on top of it. Fruit flies prefer to develop from eggs to adults in the liquid of improperly sealed canned vegetables and fruits.

Pour about half an inch of apple cider vinegar into a bowl or jar. Add a drop of dish soap to the container with vinegar. The dish soap will break the surface tension of the apple cider vinegar, causing the fruit flies to sink when they land on it. Cover the bowl or jar using a plastic wrap secured with a rubber band.

Poke or drill small holes in the lid of a soda or water bottle. Screw the lid back on the bottle, cut the top third off, set it aside, and add an attractant like apple cider vinegar, fruit juice, wine, or beer to the bottom of the bottle.

Mix about an inch of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a tall glass. Cover the glass with plastic wrap, secure it with a rubber band, and poke small holes in the top. Flies will be attracted to the vinegar in the glass and will fly through the holes.

Flypaper (also known as a fly ribbon, fly strip, fly capture tape, or fly catcher) is a fly-killing device made of paper coated with a sweetly fragrant, but extremely sticky and sometimes poisonous substance that traps flies and other flying insects when they land upon it.

It does have something in it to attract flies, but there's not need to poison them once they touch it. They're stuck for good. Change them when they get disgusting to look at, or are so full of dead insects that live ones can't land on the sticky stuff. In the right location, fly strips are very effective.
